6 Reasons Your Dog May Exhibit Abnormal Panting

The first step is identifying the potential cause of the panting. There are a few common reasons this may be occurring.

Fear

Panting may be a sign of fear. If you suspect your dog is afraid, look for signs like a tucked tail, flattened ears, dilated pupils, loss of bowel control and refusal to eat, following panting. If these sound about right, your dog may be stressed, anxious or afraid. Consider anything that may have recently caused your dog stress, such as moving to a new home or introducing a new pet or family member, and address this issue to see if it helps with your dog's panting.
