Watch Each Pet’s Body Language
You’ll want to keep an eye on all pets to observe their body language. You can tell by a pet’s body language if they are fearful, or if they feel defensive and may potentially attack. Dogs will bare their teeth, growl, or their hair may stand on end. Cats may hiss, growl, show their teeth, or their fur will stand up on their backs or tails. When introducing the pets, keep them at a distance from each other. If they seem to be okay with each other, you can gradually bridge the gap between them. If at any time there is negative body language, distract the threatened pet and then try again after a brief break. Be sure to offer each pet a treat for positive behavior toward each other.
