Tips to Prevent Overheating in Your Shih Tzu

Know the Warning Signs

You should be able to identify the warning signs of overheating or heat stroke so that you can seek treatment when needed. Your pet may become overheated even after short periods of time outdoors, so by knowing the warning signs, you can treat the problem early. Panting is one of the first signs of your Shih Tzu being overheated. Since dogs can’t sweat, they pant. If panting is excessive, make sure your dog is brought indoors to a cooler temperature immediately. Provide cold water and monitor your pet’s behavior. The panting should stop within a relatively short amount of time. If not, a trip to the vet may be in order. Other warning signs include an increased body temperature, pale gums, rapid heart rate, vomiting, or diarrhea. If multiple symptoms occur or a symptom does not go away in a short period of time, seek a vet’s assistance ASAP. If lethargy, seizures, or unconsciousness is observed, these symptoms are emergencies and should be treated by a professional immediately.
